University and community college libraries are using ebooks to supply no cost options for classes. We will demonstrate settings in the EBSCO Collection Manager and ProQuest Central interfaces and talk about options we are using for ebook settings. Practicing Lean Thinking at the University of St. Thomas Libraries

In Person & VirtualSheila Yeh, PhD, Associate Vice Provost, University Libraries & Strategic Program Development, University of St. Thomas; Karen Brunner, Associate Director, Research, Education & Engagement, University of St. Thomas; Meg Manahan, Associate Director, Collection Management & Services, University of St. Thomas

Economic challenges have been a way of life for higher education institutions for years, and the University of St. Thomas (MN) is no exception. Library service offerings, on the other hand, are expected to vigorously support faculty achievement and student success. What can libraries do when the necessary cutbacks to staffing, operations, and collections are no longer options? The University of St. Thomas Library Management Team promoted and applied ‘Lean Thinking’ principles for ways to sustain library services. The principles of value, value stream, and flow have offered successes and learning opportunities. In this presentation, the Library Management Team will introduce the lean thinking framework and share the stories of subsequent change management that occurred, our success stories, and valuable lessons learned that help us ever press forward.

Prompt Engineering as Information Literacy:  librarian engagement with campus discussions on AI tools

VirtualScott Kaihoi, St. Thomas, Academic Services Librarian; Karen Brunner, St. Thomas, Associate Director of Research, Education, & Engagement

In this session, participants will engage with the question, "How do we as librarians carve out a niche on our campuses to not just be a part of the AI conversation, but key contributors to it?" Presenters will explore a multi-pronged approach to help ensure librarians are at the center of their campus' AI conversations rather than at the margins of it, focusing on prompt engineering as the type of topic that works well for this approach.

User Authentication in a Changing Landscape

VirtualTom Tran and Lisa Baures, Minnesota State University, Mankato

With the types of electronic resources to which libraries subscribe becoming more diversified, authentication methods are evolving with a greater degree of complexity. This is particularly true of business databases providing access to large sets of data and proprietary information, such as Capital IQ and Checkpoint EDGE. The current landscape suggests a movement away from IP validation and EZproxy. This presentation will explore the challenges of keeping abreast with vendor preferred authentication methods from the perspective of a student or faculty member and library systems personnel.

Videos, closed captions and Islandora

In PersonErica Nutzman, Minnesota State Law Library, Head of Technical Services

In 2022, the State Court Administrator began requiring that all new content put online by the Judicial Branch must be accessible. In order to follow the requirement and complete our video digitization project, the State Law Library needed to be able to make our archival videos accessible. This presentation will walk through the process of making our collections of digitized videos accessible through closed captioning and the work we have done in Islandora to present the work to the public.

We Declare Bankruptcy! Creating a Library Website From Scratch

In PersonRachel Wightman, Concordia University, St. Paul, Associate Director of Library & Academic Support Services and Christina Koss, Concordia University, St. Paul, Digital Services Librarian

In the Fall of 2023 Concordia University, St. Paul went live with a brand new library website. This website redesign did not involve switching to a new CMS but an opportunity to recreate all content (including all LibGuides) within the SpringShare CMS system. Every aspect of the website and all LibGuides were evaluated and recreated without simply copying and pasting the content. What resulted was a fresh, new website focused on usability for CSP students. Come hear about their experience and how it might help motivate you to work on your own CMS, LibGuides or SubjectPlus redesign or cleanup project!

Welcome to the land of Esploro!

In PersonCarmen Aslesen - Digital Initiatives Librarian

The University of St. Thomas recently migrated to Ex Libris' institutional repository Esploro. Come and see what this magical land of institutional scholarship is all about! We'll walk through the reasons St. Thomas decided to make the change from their previous institutional repository (Elsevier/bepress's Digital Commons) and what they have been able to do with Esploro so far.
